New Trucking Company? Try our Pay-by-mile Program
When starting out on your own, it can be very complicated to figure out all the regulation, compliance & insurance requirements. At Trucking Insurance Group, we provide solutions to these complications, allowing you to focus on booking loads & enjoying the fruits of your labor. We have a New Venture Guide designed to advise & guide you on the steps it takes to become compliant and obtaining your Operating Authority. Sincerely, we want to see every motor carrier prosper.
New Venture Trucking Insurance
Trucking Insurance Group has crafted a new venture guide to act as a guide and checklist for any new motor carrier or driver. We also provide endless Compliance, Safety and Best Practices & Procedures templates for you to implement into your trucking operations. These templates are necessary as you will face audits. Scoring poorly on these audits can lead to surging insurance premiums, restrictive terms set forth by the carrier, and a big loss of revenue due to being denied loads. The FMCSA can permanently cease operations for your trucking company, making it crucial to abide by their regulations.
Obtaining a DOT & MC Number
To apply for your DOT Number, Please click on the link: (URS) https://portal.fmcsa.dot.gov/UrsRegistrationWizard
You will need to register for the URS (Unified Registration System) to apply for your DOT & MC Number
You will need information about your company such as your EIN, company name, address, etc...
Both DOT & MC Numbers require a fee to obtain.
A video explaining how to register can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQpzP_JnlpQ&t=293s
Unified Carrier Registration (UCR)
For Interstate operations, motor carriers must register for the Unified Carrier Registration before operating their vehicle.
Please register using the link: https://www.ucr.gov/
Interstate Operations do NOT need to register with UCR.
The FMCSA requires that you have a process agent in every state that you travel through or do business in.
Every motor carrier must obtain a processing agent for the FMCSA, DOT, Shippers & State Agencies to send documentation to. This ensures you always receive the mail, no matter how many states you might do business in.
Please see FMCSA approved BOC-3 processing agents here: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/process-agents

Vehicle Registration (IRP Plates)
Apportioned plates are for motor carriers that will be operating in more than one state.
You must register every tractor & trailer you own with your home states DMV.
For TX, you register & pay a fee for every vehicle/trailer through TxFLEET which can be found here: https://txfleet.txdmv.gov/Identity/Authentication/Login?ReturnUrl=%2F
New Venture Guide
Step By Step
Insurance & Filings (MCS90 & BMC91-X)
In order to obtain your operating authority, your insurance carrier must file a BMC-91x with the FMCSA, stating you have sufficient insurance coverage to operate in interstate & intrastate commerce.
The MCS90 attaches to your policy as well, triggered by the BMC91-X.
You can NOT do these filings, they can only be obtained by securing auto liability insurance coverage.
International Fuel & Tax Agreement (IFTA)
IFTA mileage reports are required for every motor carrier that is crossing state lines.
It is a tax on fuel imposed by each state for the gas and roads you used while traveling in their state.
You MUST keep track of your mileage and file an IFTA report quarterly.
