Box Truck Insurance

What is Box Truck Insurance?

Box truck insurance is a special type of commercial vehicle insurance specifically designed to protect box trucks and box truck operators. Policies combine physical damage coverage for the truck and liability protection for the driver. Protection is also often included for the cargo transported inside box trucks, which can range from furniture to goods from warehouses and more.

Coverages and policy forms can vary depending on what freight you are hauling, so it is important to be specific about what you plan to haul. This helps us craft a policy specific to your operations, ensuring adequate coverage, and favorable terms and conditions. Box truck operations are versatile in the freight they haul, making it curcial to understand what is covered under your cargo insurance policy.

Why Do You Need Box Truck Insurance?

While Box & Straight Trucks are not as big as Semi-Trucks or Dump Trucks, they still meet the threshold of 26,000 Gross-Vehicle-Weight (GVW), requiring the driver or operator to have not only a CDL, but a DOT Number as well (A MC Number is required as well if you're crossing state lines). Box Trucks & Straight Trucks fall under the purview of the FMCSA, meaning drivers must comply with all state & federal regulation. The FMCSA will require you to have state & federal filings in order to obtain your operating authority. Trucking Insurance Group will handle your filings.

Bobtail Liability Insurance: Bobtail Insurance provides coverage for owner operators when the trailer is NOT attached. Typically, this includes when you are under dispatch or en-route to pick up a load.

Non-Trucking Liability Insurance: Bobtail Insurance provides coverage for owner operators when the trailer is NOT attached. Typically, this includes when you are under dispatch or en-route to pick up a load.

Occupational Accident Insurance: This coverage is intended for Owner Operators who are leased onto a motor carrier. If they are 1099 employees, they must obtain Occupational Accident INSTEAD of Workers Compensation.

Physical Damage Insurance: This is the type of insurance that you will need to pay for the damage to your tractor/trailer during an accident, or because of another covered loss. Coverage will include both comprehensive damage caused by vandalism, theft or severe weather, as well as collision damage caused by an accident. There is a huge difference in Actual Cost Value (ACV) Vs. Replacement Cost (RC) coverage, making it vital that you have an experienced broker to advise you of these coverage differences.

Motor Truck Cargo Insurance: (A.K.A) MTC, this policy provides coverage for the freight you are hauling, while it is in your care, custody & control (CCC). This coverage is vital for any "For-Hire" trucking operations to protect yourself, the shipper & freight broker. Most insurance carriers have crafted their own Motor Truck Legal Liability Form, so it is important to understand what is covered & what is excluded.

Workers Compensation Insurance: Workers Compensation will cover medical bills, physical therapy, prescriptions, and necessary travel expenses for any work-related injury. In order to receive benefits, the treating doctor must be on the state’s approved list. If the injury is serious, the employee may be entitled to lifetime medical benefits. It will also cover lost wages, burial & death benefits & legal action if an employee sues your workplace after an injury.

Umbrella/Excess Insurance: Umbrella or Excess Insurance provides extra protection for your company in the event of an catastrophic loss (CAT/Shock Loss). These coverages are secondary and only triggered when all other applicable coverage limits have exhausted. It is imperative that you have this coverage as the risk of not securing it is enough to put most motor carriers out of business.

Box Truck Insurance Coverages

Auto Liability Insurance: Your transportation liability insurance will cover bodily injury, provide financial support for medical expenses, and property damage. If legal action is taken out against you because of the accident, your liability insurance will also cover the cost of your defense, regardless if you are found to be at fault or not.

Truckers General Liability Insurance: General liability insurance for truckers is a type of insurance that can help protect you financially if you're ever held responsible for damaging someone else's property or causing an injury. This coverage is important because it can help pay for things like repairs to the other person's property, medical bills, and even legal fees if you're sued.
